A Brent -based company caught with a stash of counterfeit hoodies, T-shirts and London souvenirs received a hefty fine at Willesden Magistrates' Court on August 15.

Souvenirs of London Ltd was ordered to pay £4,785 after Brent Council Trading Standards Officers found more than 1,300 items of counterfeit clothing in its Willesden warehouse.

The stash included Oxford University hoodies, and London Eye and London Dungeon T-shirts with fake trademarks.

The discovery occurred during an inspection of the company's Willesden warehouse last year.

Souvenirs of London Ltd director Minaxi Popat pleaded guilty to three charges on behalf of her company of possessing clothing with infringing trade marks.

The company claimed it did not intend to breach any registered trade marks but just wanted to show off famous landmarks.

Oxford University brand representatives had previously contacted Ms Popat on two occasions to ask her to stop selling the clothes.

But the company denied that the goods breached Oxford University's trademark and continued to supply them.

Magistrates ordered Souvenirs of London Ltd to pay a total of £4,785, including £1,000 for each offence, £1615 of costs and a £170 victim surcharge as well as to forfeit all the goods seized from them.

Councillor Tom Miller, Brent's cabinet member for stronger communities, said:

"We want to send out a clear message that dodgy traders like this won't be tolerated in Brent."

He added: "Selling trade marked items without the required consent is illegal and takes money away from genuine, reputable businesses."

"It's also not fair on customers who want to buy a genuine product and later find out they have purchased an unofficial knock-off."
