As British holidaymakers prepare to jet off this summer, thousands of trips could be disrupted by delays at UK airports, new research has revealed.

According to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), July and August are the worst months for flight delays with passengers almost twice as likely to be held up than if you fly during winter.

Watch out in particular if you are flying from Gatwick Airport - the hub near Horley has emerged as the worst offender for delayed flights.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority revealed 47% of flights from Gatwick were delayed in July 2015, and 43% in August the same year. In February, it was 22%.

Heathrow Airport though doesn't fare much better with 33% of flights delayed in July 2015 and 28% in August that year, up from 18% in February 2015.

Flight delay compensation app airFair is urging passengers to be prepared for delays and know their rights when it comes to claiming compensation.

Will Smith, head of airFair, said: "Passengers are even more likely to be faced with disruptions in July and August as we flock to warmer climes to enjoy some summer sun.

"Flight delays can have a big impact on the enjoyment of a holiday; it’s important consumers are prepared for this possibility and know how to make a compensation claim."

Nearly half of flights from Gatwick in July 2015 were delayed

It's not just 'London' airports affected though, 29% of flights in July and August 2015 were delayed at Manchester Airport and 21% and 23% respectively at Birmingham Airport.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) an increase in passenger numbers due to a drop in the cost of air travel could contribute to delays.
