Brent Cross shopping centre could be set for a £1.4bn redevelopment which will see it more than double in size and bring its total number of shops to around 200.

Shoppers can expect 120 new shops, 40 new restaurants, a cinema complex and hotel accommodation if the plan goes ahead.

Owners Hammerson and Standard Life Investments, who will begin consultation on November 3, said the plan would see the 40-year-old centre doubling in size to 1.9million square feet.

Up to 3,500 jobs, new homes and a new Marks and Spencer anchor store have all been promised in addition to a town square which will become a "hub for for leisure and entertainment activities."

Inside a new look Brent Cross Shopping Centre

If approved, the new look shopping centre would be one of the biggest in London, rivalling other shopping hubs such as Westfield.

Peter Cole, chief investment officer for Hammerson, said: "Brent Cross has been an iconic part of retail in London and the local community for 40 years.

"The challenge we have set the design team is to create a destination for the best global brands and experiences and at the same time still retain Brent Cross’ distinctive character and personal touch which can be enjoyed by future generations."

Developers hope to submit a planning application to Barnet Council in spring 2017, with a hoped completion date of 2022.

Public consultation will begin at the shopping centre on November 3 from 10am to 8pm, and then on November 4 from 10am to 8pm.

Further consultation dates will include November from 9am to 8pm and November 6 from 12pm to 6pm at the centre.

A new Marks and Spencer has been promised

A final two consultation dates will be held on November 7 from 11am to 6pm and November 8 from 2pm to 7pm, both of which will be held at Hendon Leisure Centre.

The transformation comes as part of a larger £4.5bn regeneration plan for Brent Cross and Cricklewood, granted in 2010, which includes almost 6,700 homes for the area.

James Stevens, head of UK development at Standard Life Investments, said: "Our plans for Brent Cross London are exciting and ambitious.

"We really welcome feedback as this is a major investment and we want to make the most of the opportunity to enhance one of London’s best-loved shopping destinations."
