The number of asylum seekers getting government support in Ealing is growing over four times faster than anywhere else in the country.
According to astonishing Home Office figures, the number of asylum seekers in Ealing went up 31% from 154 people getting support at the end of June 2016 to 202 by the end of September.
The national average's growth across west London is 2.5%, a staggering difference from Ealing's latest numbers.
Between June and September 2016, the number of asylum seekers supported by public money in West London as a whole increased by 13%.
It wasn't equal across west London boroughs however - Hammersmith and Fulham registered the
largest decline in the number of supported asylum seekers, 30%, from 30 to 21, and 31.8%.
Westminster also saw a reduction, from 22 to 15 fewer people.
The Home Office provides support under Section 95 of the Immigration and Asylum Act that contributes to asylum seekers’ housing and basic living expenses while their asylum application and any subsequent appeal is being considered.
Once the application has been processed and approved they
are moved to dispersal accommodation elsewhere in the UK.
The North West of the country saw the highest number of asylum seekers supported by the Government per person, there were 127.3 each 100,000 in September 2016, followed by the North East with 123.8.
By contrast, the lowest number was in South East with 5.9 people
seeking asylum per 100,000.
London saw the biggest increase in the UK with 12.5% more asylum seekers getting money from the Government compared to the second quarter of 2016.
