Uxbridge & South Ruislip constituents tackled newly-elected MP Boris Johnson on a London radio show.

Mr Johnson put worries to rest after a spate of burglaries in South Ruislip but admitted he won't be living in the area himself.

Alan Palmer, 59, of South Ruislip, was the first caller put through on the show.

He was already known to the Mayor of London after trying to contact him repeatedly, and asked what he is going to do about the problem.

Mr Johnson said: “I've got on to the Borough Commander and we had a long conversation about burglary in the area.

“They perfectly accept there was a spike and accept your reasons for concern. They assure me that they've got it under control and the figures suggest that it has been coming down quite substantially.”

Mr Palmer, who set up the Crime Awareness group for Ruislip and Eastcote, reiterated that the 'spike' experienced in South Ruislip was 400 burglaries in just four months.

But the Conservative Party MP suggested the sudden rise of crime in the area was caused by people coming into the borough from outside.

He added: “It's a familiar problem in Barnet and Brent.”

While Mr Palmer had the chance to speak to the MP directly, he questioned him on Ruislip WW2 Veteran Lionel Lake, who had his life savings stolen as he slept.

Mr Johnson responded: “I think it's absolutely disgraceful and it's sickening that WW2 veterans should be treated in that way.”

He commended the plan to create a new visitor's centre at the Battle of Britain bunker at the old RAF Uxbridge to celebrate veterans.

Another constituent showed contempt for the newly-elected MP, by saying: "Many people resent you being parachuted into a safe seat."

Denise Cunningham, of Ruislip, then asked: "Will you be making your home in the constituency and will you be using the local shops and restaurants on a regular basis?"

Mr Johnson said: "I'll never be far away and I'll be living not far away."

LBC presenter, Nick Ferrari, took the opportunity to quiz Boris on his local knowledge.

A bumbling Boris could name Intu Uxbridge but Mr Ferrari had to remind him of the Pavillions shopping centre.

Mr Johnson suggested a "pub crawl" in Uxbridge with Mr Ferrari to avoid singling one pub out and not leaving the others with a "rightful sense of indignation".

To ease any future worries of Uxbridge & South Ruislip constituents, he will hold surgeries "more often than predecessor John Randall", he said.

"He [Mr Randall] did an outstanding job," he added. "He had surgeries about once a month and I will do it far more frequently than that."

The MP and Mayor suggested residents speak to Cllr Wayne Bridges or see him at a surgery if they have any problems.

The #AskBoris show aired live at 9am on Tuesday (May 12).

Perhaps the newly-elected MP should test his knowledge with this pub quiz!
