A secondary school in Hounslow which was backed by the then London mayor Boris Johnson is "taking effective action" following criticism by Ofsted .

Kingsley Academy was rated "requires improvement" in May 2015 by inspectors from the education watchdog.

A follow-up visit in October last year found the school was still doing too little to address the shortcomings identified.

However, a new interim report published last Friday (September 23) paints a much rosier picture for the school.

"There have been tangible improvements since my previous visit," wrote the Ofsted inspector Vanessa Ward, whose latest visit came in July this year.

"You have a clear vision for the school which you have shared with staff. Communication has improved. Staff have contributed to the planning process and feel valued. There is a clear improvement in staff morale."

'Teaching better and attendance up'

Ms Ward said the quality of teaching had improved and this was reflected in the achievements of pupils, including those considered disadvantaged.

She also noted that attendance was up, particularly among sixth-formers.

Then London mayor Boris Johnson officially opens Kingsley Academy in Hounslow in April 2013

However, she found the attendance and performance of white British pupils had not improved quickly enough.

"Senior leaders and the management board are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the section 5 inspection in order to become a good school," she concluded.

'Happy to get the call'

Principal Lesley Kirby said: "Although no school relishes a visit from Ofsted, at Kingsley Academy we were quite happy to 'get the call' so we could show off just how much progress we have been making over the last months.

"We were pleased with the report and our results this year have reinforced the inspector's comments.

"These spoke of 'tangible improvements'; a clear, shared vision; 'the quality and pace of strategic planning'; 'swift and open changes'.

"Parents and carers are invited to come and visit Kingsley Academy during the day to see for themselves how well the school is working.

"On a personal level, I am delighted that the dedication and skill of the staff is being recognised through student successes."

School was rated 'good' under former guise

The school was previously called Hounslow Manor and was rated "good" when it was inspected by Ofsted in 2011.

Its rating was downgraded after the school was relaunched under its new name by Mr Johnson in 2013 , becoming the fourth of his mayoral academies.

It is sponsored by the Academies Enterprise Trust.

How Kingsley Academy's new building will look

The current principal Lesley Kirby took the reins in January this year, after Anjali Sakhardande relinquished charge in 2015.

Ms Kirby said following her appointment that the school had some great staff in place and she was not sure it had deserved to be rated "requires improvement".

Work began in April this year on a new five-storey building at the school , which will enable it to nearly double its capacity from just over 800 pupils to 1,400.
