Nearly 4,000 people playing an interactive walking game on the streets of Hounslow have together trekked almost 27,000 miles - more than once around the earth.

Beat the Street competitors earn points by walking or cycling between so-called "beat boxes" around Isleworth , where they touch in and out to record the distance covered.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School, in Isleworth, currently tops both the overall and average points leaderboards, but with the contest running until April 13 there's plenty to play for.

Marko Stefanovski, aged nine, is an avid competitor and has been out walking whenever possible to score points for his team Marlborough Primary School.

His mother Biljana said: "I think Beat the Street is great and love anything that gets children off the internet and games to encourage physical activity.

"What is lovely about it is that it is a challenge and they are given a reason to go out and score points. It pushes you to do it."

Sports Relief sponsored walk on Sunday

You can sign up for a sponsored walk on Sunday (March 20) to raise money for Sport Relief while clocking up extra points.

The 5km walk will begin at 10.30am at the Park Road entrance of West Middlesex Hospital , in Isleworth, and the route takes in 11 beat boxes. Participants are invited to donate £1 to Sport Relief.

Beat the Street is run by Intelligent Health on behalf of Hounslow Council . The free contest, which is open to anyone, was designed to promote walking and cycling, and to reduce car journeys.

Councillor Ed Mayne, Hounslow Council's leisure chief, said: "It's great to see people out and about, committed to making physical activity an integral part of their lives.

"The competition is a real talking point in Hounslow and has encouraged the whole community to get out and to explore the local area."
