Litter louts have been named and shamed as Hounslow council stamps down on its battle against grime crime.

At least 12 fine dodgers were taken to court and ordered to pay almost 1000% of the normal fine.

The culprits from Hayes , Hounslow , Kingsbury and as far as East Sussex, landed a legal bill of £642 after refusing to pay the initial fixed penalty notice (FPN) of £80.

This could have been settled for £65 if paid within 10 days.

The fine was increased to £220 by order of Magistrates at Ealing Magistrates' Court, court costs amounting to £392 and a victim surcharge of £30.

Collection orders were issued for the following people who were ordered to pay a total £642 in their absence:

The litter bugs attempting to flout the law were taken to court on February 20, 2017.

In addition, 10 prosecutions were withdrawn after the FPN was paid.

Two cases were re-opened and then withdrawn following a late payment.

One other matter was listed for re-opening at the request of the defendant, but the magistrates dismissed that application.

The message from Hounslow council is clear "If you don’t want to pay a fine, then don’t drop your litter!"

Councillor Sue Sampson, cabinet member for community protection at Hounslow Council, added: “We want to stamp out those who are blighting our communities and making resident’s lives a misery by being litter nuisances.

“Those who are fined should accept their error and pay their penalty. If they don’t we will not hesitate to take the strongest legal action and publically name them, as the courts allow us to do.

I hope that this serves as a deterrent to those who think this behaviour is acceptable because it is not.”

Last year, more than £4m was spent keeping the borough's streets clean.
