Aspiring teachers can learn more about joining the profession at a roadshow coming to London next weekend.

The free 'Train to Teach' conference will give potential applicants an insight into the world of teaching and guide them through how to apply.

The event, organised by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), will take place at the QEII Centre in Broad Sanctuary, Westminster , on Saturday, November 7, from 9.30am-4pm.

Attendees will be able to meet current teachers, hear from some of the schools and universities offering training courses, and learn about the financial support available.

Newly qualified chemistry teacher Grainne Kearns, who is now working at Isleworth & Syon School , urged people to take advantage of the opportunity.

The 22-year-old came to England from Sligo, Ireland, to fulfil her ambition of becoming a teacher after graduating from university.

"I am passionate about getting more people, especially girls, interested in science. I love witnessing the children experience the 'light bulb' moment, when everything fits into place," she said.

"The first few weeks of teaching can be hard because the children are getting to know you, but if you persevere it's so rewarding.

"I never thought before I started teaching that the children would make me laugh every day. They can be very funny and they're so unpredictable it's always interesting.

"If you're thinking about teaching I would say give it a go because you'll never know what you're missing otherwise, and attending the Train to Teach roadshow is a great first step."
