Army troops will be withdrawn from London's streets now the busy Bank Holiday weekend is over and in light of the lowered terror threat.

Metropolitan Police announced that military personnel, who were supporting police across the UK under Operation Temperer following the Manchester terror attacks, are gradually being stood down.

The reduction of military support will continue over the next three days, from Tuesday (May 30) onwards.

The decision to step down follows a judgement by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre that a terrorist attack was no longer imminent and the threat level being lowered from "critical" to "severe" on Saturday (May 27).

Extra police resources, which were also in place for the many public events over the extended weekend, have also been stood down.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, the national lead for Counter Terrorism Policing, said: “I’d like to thank military colleagues for their assistance and the public for their continued support during this challenging time.

"The extra resources that were in place over the last week are being phased out.

"However, military personnel will remain in readiness to support the police should it be necessary.

“The threat level from terrorism in the UK remains severe and the public should remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or in an emergency the public should always call 999.”

The UK's terror threat level was increased to "critical" after the suicide bomber attack at Manchester Arena, as an increased threat level signifying an attack was "imminent".
