London will experience increased air pollution levels this weekend as high temperatures increase the risk of smog in the capital.

The city will enjoy highs of up to 24 degrees Celsius, as London will see warmer temperatures than holiday destinations such as the Canary Islands.

Air pollution levels are higher than normal in the capital - reaching Level 4 or moderate - which could last until Sunday.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), said those with lung or heart problems who experience a change in their symptoms should consider avoiding strenuous activity, particularly outdoors.

Air pollution is not likely to pose a direct risk to the general population.

A spokesman from the Met Office said: "Air pollution levels are slightly higher today, but are still in the lower bands.

"Pollution might affect people prone to lung conditions; if they notice any change in their symptoms the advice is to consider their habits, lower their exertion levels outside, and be mindful.

"At the moment, it's not high. Most of England is experiencing moderate levels of air pollution."

A spokesman for Defra said: "Strong south-easterly winds blowing in air from the continent could lead to moderate levels of pollution on Thursday and over the weekend in parts of England and Wales.

"Levels are expected to fall after the weekend. This does tend to happen during the change in the temperature around spring time."

The Defra forecast said moderate air pollution is expected to persist from Thursday to Sunday.

There are currently no air pollution alerts issued.
