The Mayhew Animal Home in Harrow are looking for a new home for an abandoned four year old Great Dane and Bullmastiff cross named Chester.

Chester was found in Brent on February 11, 2016, after animal welfare officers found him emaciated and abandoned on the streets.

Soon after he arrived at the home, Chester began to develop a fever and refuse food, and Despite being on antibiotics and receiving round-the-clock medical attention, Chester began to go downhill.

After taking blood tests the Vet Team discovered that Chester was actually suffering from an infection and decided to operate on him to find out what was causing it, finding that Chester had a huge infection in his prostate, which was causing peritonitis, an inflammation of the tummy that most likely would not have occurred if he had been neutered.

After receiving lots of care and attention from the medical team, Chester's condition soon cleared, but during his recovery the Vet Team also found that Chester has the condition Colitis, which is a form of irritable bowel disease.

The team were unsure what caused this condition, but it can be easily controlled with a special diet with bran mixed into it and The Mayhew can help his future adopter or foster carer with some costs.

The Mayhew are looking for a family for Chester

Dog Adoption Officer, Lisa Guiney, said: "We are so glad that Chester managed to pull through and is now able to find the forever home he so deserves.

"This gentle giant is such a friendly boy who gets along well with everyone he meets and loves to snuggle in close for love and attention, particularly tummy tickles.

"He’s a strong boy, but providing he gets plenty of exercise, he is a calm, obedient and well behaved dog who’d make a fantastic companion."

Whilst he waits for his forever home, the Mayhew would also be willing to put Chester on foster if someone was able to offer him a temporary home, as he is not happy in the kennels environment.
