One lane was closed while the incident was dealt with on Friday (February 17) morning from around 6.30am.
According to a report from TfL Traffic Alerts on Twitter: "Traffic remains slow moving on the westbound A40 between the Polish War Memorial and Hillingdon Circus due to a broken down vehicle.
There was heavy congestion on the A40 with tailbacks reported past the RAF Northolt.
A recovery team removed the vehicle and all lanes were fully re-opened.
Traffic returned to normal a few hours later at around 9.30am.
A tweet from TfL Traffic News said: "Traffic is now flowing well on the westbound A40 in the Northolt area following the recovery of a broken down vehicle."

All lanes have been re-opened following the removal of the broken down lorry from on the A40.
According to reports the broken down vehicle has been removed.
It had been causing traffic problems on the A40 between the Polish War Memorial and Hillingdon Circus since around 6.30am, affecting people travelling during the morning rush hour.
Traffic is easing on the A40 following the earlier broken down vehicle.
