A police watchdog has launched an investigation in to a collision on the A316 in the early hours of Wednesday morning (February 8) after a man died during a car chase.
At around 4.40am on the southbound carriageway a black Audi being pursued by the Metropolitan Police was involved in a crash with a stationary lorry where the road meets the M3.
The driver of the Audi, a man in his late 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation has been launched and the watchdog is calling for witnesses to come forward to aid its inquiries.
Deputy chair of the IPCC, Sarah Green, said: “We have an independent investigation under way and would be grateful to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or any part of the incident.
“My sympathies go out to the man's family and friends and all those affected by this tragic event.”
The driver's family have been informed of his death.
Metropolitan Police officers closed the A316 in both directions and the southbound carriageway was closed into Wednesday afternoon.
Two lanes of the northbound carriageway were opened in the afternoon.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the IPCC by emailing witness@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk or by telephone on 0800 096 8070.
