These images show the closed road at the scene of the fatal crash on the A316.

The incident happened after a police chase ended with the driver of the car hitting the back of a lorry in the early hours of Wednesday (February 8) morning.

The crash, involving a black vehicle, occurred just before 4.30am near Sunbury.

The driver, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed.

Traffic is beginning to ease as some roads have re-opened.

The Northbound carriageway has opened as well as eastbound between M3 Sunbury Cross and Hospital Bridge Road.

Westbound on the A316 remains closed between Hospital Bridge Road and M3/Sunbury Cross.

Delays remain on diversions in the Twickenham and Richmond areas.

Highways England has said long delays remain on the M3 eastbound from junction 2.

Motorists travelling during the morning rush hour were placed on diverted routes as a stretch of the road was closed while emergency services were at the scene.

Many reported being stuck in standstill traffic as the A316 was closed in both directions at junction 1.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission will investigate the incident.
