Mutts called Max are among the most mischievous in Britain, a survey has revealed.

The research from Pets at Home showed that Labradors and Jack Russells were the breeds most likely to end up in the dog house for chewing shoes or swallowing false teeth.

They are closely followed by Cocker Spaniels and Staffordshire Bull Terriers for getting up to mischief while owners have their backs turned, Mirror Online reports .

The survey found that more than a third of frazzled dog lovers have had to cancel their plans because of a dog’s extraordinary escapades.

Almost one in 10 have had to miss work trying to sort out a mess caused by their troublesome pooch, while almost two in 10 had to scrap a weekend away.

Two-thirds of owners said their curious pet had eaten something they shouldn’t have from a family member’s dinner, or other things like batteries and vital documents.

Nearly half admitted they were worried about leaving their hound home alone - which is somewhat understandable as four in 10 had returned to find an unwelcome 'present' in the house, while a quarter said they had experienced a 'Marley & Me' moment with furniture being chewed and ruined.

Last year, Petplan paid out £4.7m in insurance cover for pets who had swallowed a foreign object and £2.3m in cases where dogs had been poisoned by eating something they shouldn't have.

Jonny Armstrong, head of insurance at Pets at Home, said: “We all know that our pets can get themselves into bumps and scrapes as a result of their naughtiness.

“If your pet ever puts themselves in danger through ingesting something they shouldn’t have, then ensure you seek medical attention from a veterinary surgeon immediately.

"Ensure you keep anything they shouldn’t have locked away in order to prevent any unwanted mishaps taking place as a result.”
