Smacking your child is about to become illegal in Scotland and Wales.

It means English parents will now have to think before they smack when travelling through or visiting the neighbouring nations.

It's legal in both countries for now, but they plan on outlawing physical child punishment completely.

In England it is illegal to hit children, however there is a legal defence that allows parents to do so.

Private hire nannies can also smack your children if you give them permission.

Teachers, nursery staff and care workers are not allowed to hit your children - that's illegal.

The legal defence in England for hitting your child is "reasonable punishment" under Section 58 of the Children Act 2004 - this only applies to parents and legal guardians.

Anyone who is concerned about a child should contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000.
