The owner of a shop in Wembley High Road who was caught selling banned tobacco products and cigarettes without sufficient health warnings has been fined and ordered to carry out community service

Counterfeit cigarette lighters and premiership football clubs logos were also found in the Sangit Paan House Limited premisis.

It it the second time the shop has committed the offence and alongside 100 hours of community service, 35-year-old Jaydeep Bharat Thakker was ordered to pay £557 in costs.

A victim surcharge of £85 must also be paid, as ordered by Willesden Magistrates Court on October 25.

Furthermore, the company, Sangit Paan House Limited, must pay a victim surcharge of £60 on top of a fine of £600 and costs of £557.

The company had previously been convicted of the same offences last year, on October 13.

Aside from banned products, the shop failed to display a tobacco notice, to which the shop owner claimed that he believed a warning on the cigarette pack to be adequate.

In February this year, Brent Council's Trading Standards Officers seized 104 chewing tobacco packs, 74 packets of cigarettes, 67 beedi's and 260 packs of chaini khaini oral tobacco from the premises, all of which were illegal products.

"We want everyone who shops in Brent to be able to buy safe and correctly labelled products," said the leader of Brent Council, Councillor Muhammed Butt.

"We'll continue to crack down on business owners who put profits before the wellbeing of their customers.

"This business owner showed a blatant disregard for the law, having previously been convicted and is now paying the price for his actions.

"The sentence showed how seriously the court took this matter by giving Mr Thakker a community penalty.

"This is another good result from Brent's Trading Standards Team."
