Hillingdon borough marked Commonwealth Day on Monday (March 10) with the raising of a flag representing the unity between the 53 members states.

The Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Allan Kauffman, read a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation to those who gathered in the Civic centre forecourt, in High Street, Uxbridge, before flying the flag at 10am.

It was one of over 500 Commonwealth ceremonies being held throughout the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man in March to mark the occasion.

The initiative enables people to show their commitment to the Commonwealth, and the values it stands for.

The Mayor of Hillingdon said: "I am proud to be part of an event that recognises the role of the Commonwealth."

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the Head of the Commonwealth, mainly formed of former territories of the British Empire.
