As local politicians gear up for this year’s local elections maybe it’s a good time to think about why the results of the elections in Hounslow will make a difference to you!

First of all Councils spend a lot of your money - local government spending amounts to about 25% of all public spending in the UK. The largest slice of budgets goes on education, followed by social services - much of which is spent on elderly care. Who is going to best deliver value for money for you over the next four years? Councils are having to make do with less cash - and who is in power will determine where savings are made. Your vote could help determine local services in future.

I am delighted to support a Government that is ending the era of top-down government by giving new powers to local councils, communities, neighbourhoods and individuals. So another question for May 2014 is who locally has the imagination and vision to make the most of these new opportunities?

Small things that really get to you on a daily basis are probably the responsibility of Hounslow Council. Fed up that your streets are dirty? Cross about heavy handed parking restrictions? Missed refuse collection? Potholes? What our borough will look like in the future is also down to the Council. From your neighbour's loft conversion to new football stadium and housing - the council has a say.

On top of all this it’s at this ballot box this year that you will decide who the person will be on the other end of the telephone or email if you need to be re-housed or appeal to get your child into the school you wanted. Your local councillor should be the person to help in cases like this – make sure you choose someone up to the job!

Local elections this May are your main chance to make your voice heard for the next four years. So please do be bothered!
