TWO ‘overjoyed’ young men have launched their careers as part of a new national apprenticeship scheme.

Shakeel Edah-Tally and Ian Hughes have won training places at BT Local Business in Peterborough Road, Harrow.

They were hired after company staff grilled them at an interview day styled in the fashion of BBC TV show The Apprentice on Monday.

The apprenticeship scheme, run by the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP), is designed to offer telecoms businesses the help they need to grow their own talent. BT Local Business was among the first to sign up.

Its managing director, Saima Butt, said: “I have long believed that a telecoms apprenticeship is the right way to bring new talent into our organisation.

“The ITP apprenticeship scheme will make sure they have the learning they need and my team and I will work with them to develop their business skills in the workplace.”

Ian, 21, of Gayton Road, Harrow, said: “I’m not one to get too frantic usually, but I’m quite overjoyed to be honest.

“It was more of a challenge for me and a bit nerve-wracking, but it was just a big relief to get through.”
