AMBITIOUS plans to redevlop a military base into a thriving housing and entertainment site are being put to residents to find out their views.

Plans for new homes, offices, restaurants, schools, shops and a theatre are all being put forward for RAF Uxbridge, in Hillingdon Hill, Uxbridge, once it is vacated.

The base played a crucial part in the Battle of Britain, as the HQ of Number 11 Group, which defended the south of England and in September 2006 the Ministry of Defence confirmed it would be sold.

Residents are being asked to put forward their views on the council's planning document, and the consultation will begin today (Wednesday) and last until October 15.

There are four separate areas in the supplementary planning document; these are made up of the town centre extension, the southern quarter, the open space quarter and the northern quarter.

The town centre extension will bring improved links with Uxbridge High Street, shops, offices, cafes, restaurants and a theatre or music venue, while the open spaces have been recommended to be retained for recreation and access along the river.

Constance Evans, chairwoman of the Oak Farm Residents Association, said: "You have to look ahead, it is a chance for Hillingdon Borough residents to get what they want for the next 20, 30, 40, years."
