Still hounded by reckless owners

THE Government has announced proposals to tackle irresponsible dog ownership. However, the flimsy package of measures falls way short of tackling this very real problem.

To coin a phrase, prevention is better than the cure, and that is exactly what the RSPCA wants the Government to focus on, to stop people from being attacked and more dogs from suffering needless abuse and neglect.

The RSPCA is concerned this could be a missed opportunity and wants to see a more comprehensive approach that prevents serious incidents from occurring in the first place, rather than waiting for them to happen before action can be taken. We will be telling the Government exactly what we think of their proposals as part of their consultation, and we hope you will too.

You can find out more about all of the issues surrounding irresponsible dog ownership, as well as how to take part in Defra’s consultation, by visiting the RSPCA’s new 42 Teeth campaign pages at www.rspca.org.uk/42teeth.

You can also draft your own response to the consultation from these pages and we urge you to share with the Government your experiences and thoughts on this issue by June 15.

As our campaign notes, all dogs have 42 teeth, but only some have irresponsible owners – and this is what any laws should tackle.

Whose pockets are the deepest?

I ASSUME that when Mr Kennedy, secretary of Hillingdon Against Cuts, talks about putting money back into people’s pockets, he actually means putting more taxpayers’ money into public sector workers’ pockets and their pension pots (Gazette, May 16).

We are told public sector workers have already pretty good pensions compared to those in the private sector. I should like to know the truth.

I felt that Mr Peter Curling’s piece as the new leader of the Labour Group on Hillingdon Council disappointed somewhat as it contained nothing particularly new.
