Harrow students have been rewawarded for their achievements in the community at a prestigious awards ceremony.

More than 100 prizes were handed out the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards, which took place at Harrow Arts Centre, in Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, to celebrate the achievements of over 100 young people on Thursday (19).

Thirteen schools and colleges in the borough were recognised by the foundation for their outstanding ability to motivate and encourage young people.

Nine staff were also presented with Jack Petchey Leader Awards for their contribution to their schools.

Rose Brougham, deputy head at Whitmore High School was presented with an award after being nominated by staff.

She said: "It was unexpected, but it was extremely fulfillingto be recognised. It was a lovely evening and the performances were first class.

"We are so pleased to be involved in such a great charity."

The student winners received a medallion and certificate as well as a £300 cheque to be spent on their school.

Teachers who were awarded with the leader award also received a medallion and £1,000 to be spent on their school to provide new equipment for a variety of departments.

The evening featured performances from The Harrow Youth Gospel Choir and young singers from Canons High School, the Canons R&B Group, who performed a song they had written themselves.

The award scheme contributes £52,000 to education in Harrow every year. The ceremony is now its second year and £182,000 has been donated by the Foundation to schools, clubs and organisations in Harrow since 2005.
