JUST to let you know that your article about the closure of RAF Uxbridge brought back some lovely memories for my mum, who is now 87 and lives in Cookham (Last post at RAF Uxbridge, Gazette, April 7).

She enlisted in the RAF in 1942 and was in 11 Flight. After her basic training at an RAF base in north Wales, she served at several bases in England and Scotland before moving to RAF Uxbridge in 1946.

Her prime role was as a driver - anything from petrol tankers to conveying famous RAF personnel (Squadron Leaders and Wing Commanders) to their respective RAF bases.

Her memories of RAF Uxbridge where she served for approximately six months are vivid.

My dad died some six years ago - he was also in the RAF as an armourer and saw service at sea, in the Far East and Australia, but my mum's stories and memories are still as real today for her as they were over 60 years ago.

I live in Uxbridge and took the copy of the Gazette over to her last week.

Thank you again: Although she was obviously saddened to hear of the base's closure, the memories which your article and pictures brought back were much valued.
