A GP surgery with more than 1,800 patients is to close, but NHS Hillingdon insists that it doesn’t need replacing.

The Practice, on the corner of Dunedin Way and Yeading Lane, Hayes, will shut its doors for good on March 31.

The lease on the building is expiring, and the landlord doesn’t want to extend it.

The Practice is the name of the private primary care provider which delivers healthcare at the surgery for the borough’s Primary Care Trust (PCT). Seventeen other PCTs around the country have commissioned its services.

The borough's PCT and The Practice were unable to find an alternative premises that would be convenient for patients in time.

This option has now been ruled out anyway because the process of farming out the service to prospective health providers and then moving into a new premises could take up to a year.

Instead, the 1831 patients registered there have been told that they need to find an alternative GP surgery.

There are 12 within a mile radius of the Dunedin Way practice, and NHS Hillingdon says that it is ‘confident’ that these can absorb the shortfall.

NHS North West London said in a statement: “We have informed patients and sought feedback from them on the preferred way forward, and given them information on other high quality practices in the area.

“We would like to offer our reassurance that support will be provided to all those who need it during this process and all patients will continue to have full access to the health services they need.”

Vulnerable patients will be given extra assistance during the switch.

A spokesperson from The Practice added: “Working with the PCT we are currently in consultation with our patients in order to ensure they will continue to be looked after within the area once the surgery has closed. We remain at all times committed to our patients and their best interests and will do our very best to ensure a smooth transition.”

Trevor Begg of Hillingdon LINk, the borough’s health watchdog, said: “It is a very small surgery, there are a number of other practices in the immediate area, and there are no closed lists in Hillingdon everybody, so as far as I know nobody has had problems registering elsewhere.

“Because of changes to the health economy, it actually might be beneficial for patients who can choose where they go.”
