IT has puzzled postmen for years but a road sign spelt wrong in Kingsbury will finally be replaced.

Mother-of-two, Veronica Hekic, has complained to Brent Council on a number of occasions about the road sign in Fairfields Close which does not have an 's' on the end.

Instead, at one end of the road it reads Fairfield Close and has confused postmen, couriers and ambulances in the past.

Mrs Hekic, whose 14-year-old son Thomas is disabled, is annoyed it has taken years for the local authority to correct it. She said: "At one end of the road it says Fairfield Close, at the other Fairfields Close.

"I've lived in this road for 16 years and always wondered which one it is. Every time I have called the council about it I've just been ignored. I sometimes have to call an ambulance for my son and on many occasions the driver has got confused and had to ring my house to check where it is. The final straw was last week when a poor man knocked on my door trying to deliver a parcel but he did not know what road he was on."

Since the Observer contacted the local authority, it has confirmed that the name of the road is Fairfields Close and says a new sign has been ordered.

Mrs Hekic, a mother-of-two, said: "It is a good result but why has it taken so long to be fixed? When I bought the house I was told it was called Fairfield Close and I think some of the older residents think the road is called Fairfield Close. It has caused a lot of confusion. I just hope the council doesn't just send someone with a black felt tip pen to fix it because of cutbacks."

A council spokeswoman said: "The correct spelling is Fairfields Close. A new street name plate has been ordered."
