Heston Pool will close in February to allow work to begin on a new £13.5 million leisure centre.
Cabinet members last night formally approved plans for the new facility to replace the ageing 1930s sports complex, in Heston Road.
Heston Pool is due to close on February 14 and the new centre is expected to open in November 2015.
Plans for the new leisure centre, including a 25 metre pool, a gym and dance studios, along with 220 new homes on surrounding land, which will help fund the centre, had already been approved in principle.
As well as the new leisure centre, new sports pitches will be created and outdoor play areas will be refurbished in neighbouring Heston Park. The scouts group based on the site will be moved to a new home next to the new leisure centre.
The library, Heston Village Hall and the current play area will remain open during the building work.
Cllr Ajmer Grewal, cabinet member for leisure and public health at the council, said: “This is great news for Heston, and the wider community, who will benefit from the modern leisure facilities this project will bring.”
* People can learn more about the plans and alternative leisure facilities in the borough at a drop-in session at Heston Pool next Tuesday, December 10, from 10am to 6pm. Members of the centre will be contacted by the council’s leisure contractor Fusion.
