POLICE on a routine patrol have rescued a woman drowning in a canal.

The incident happened close to the bridge over the Grand Union Canal in Station Road, Hayes at about 4.55pm on Wednesday last week.

Two police community support officers were inspecting the area when they saw the victim in the canal.

Anthony Ladyman and Gurps Saran managed to grab hold of the woman as she struggled in the water.

They brought her to the side of the bank where they gave her a check-up.

The men's commander, Sergeant David Turner, of Hillingdon safer transport team, said: "It was good to see that the officers used their training, assessed the situation and took the necessary action to bring the woman to safety. This was possibility a life threatening situation and their actions need to be applauded."
