A CYCLIST who died in a crash in Stanwell last month has been named as Gretchen Smith, from Feltham.

Ms Smith, a 43-year-old American living in the UK, collided with a blue Peugeot 306 in Stanwell Moor Road on the evening of Friday June 26 and was airlifted to King's Hospital in London but died later that night.

Her family have been informed and an inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned.

The crash was the second serious incident in the road in just over a month and residents nearby believe action should have been taken to make the road safer.

Stephanie Appleton, of neighbouring Stanwell New Road, said: "I saw a police helicopter and an air ambulance. The whole road was closed by the police for a good few hours, and there was traffic going back a long way. It is a dangerous road, and something needs to be done."

Kelly Smith, of Stanwell New Road, said: "It is a dangerous road, and we see police down here quite a lot. It is especially dangerous with motorbikes. There was another crash in May where I saw an air ambulance land.

"I think something needs to be done to make it safer, like putting in speed bumps or cameras, as quite a lot of cars speed around the bend."
