A YOUTH theatre produced a really wiz performance in their adaptation of the classic Wizard of Oz.

Performing arts group Youth Street Beats stunned packed audiences last weekend (December 10/11) when they performed The Wizz at an adaptation of L Frank Baum’s "The wonderful Wizard of Oz" & William F. Browns 1978 film "The Wiz" at the Priory Community Centre, Acton Lane, Acton.

The 45-strong cast, with youngsters aged five to 16, represented 15 schools across the borough. Special guests includedEaling Mayor, Cllr Rajinder Mann, actor Danny John-Jules, community police and teachers from the various schools.

The cast doubled up on all the main characters and added new characters like the Genie and Cheeky Monkeys giving more children the chance of leading roles.

Actor Danny John-Jules gave them a mini master class in performing arts techniques. He advised the children to 'take command of the stage' and also taught them mini dance routines. Collette Noel, founder of Youth Street Beats, said: "It was fantastic that Danny came down. I first met Danny when I was in Carmen Jones Musical at the Old Vic as a child. He would teach me dance steps before I would go on stage. I’ve always found him amazing, so inspirational and talented. He is a perfect role model for the children as he’s done, musicals, Hollywood films and TV, especially known to children in BBC series MI High.

"The play was a huge success. Everyone was amazed with how much work was put into making it successful despite the fact of once again not getting a grant to cover the cost of the whole production, but with the dedication of our volunteers, especially Vanessa Hyman, Julie Boileau & Margaret Noel and power of recycling, we manage to keep costs down. One audience member commented on 'the community spirit, along with the diversity of smiling children and adults alike and the way we adapted the play using popular music to suit all age groups.'

"Every year we get the children asking, 'What play will we do next', even the ones who seem to be really shy when they join. This response shows me that we are fulfilling our goals of helping the children build self confidence and belief."
