A WIND turbine has spun into action pumping green energy into a TV studios.

The 55-metre high structure, the first of its kind for the company, was unveiled at Sky Studios in Isleworth on Thursday last week.

Drivers on the nearby Great West Road can spot the turbine from the road as it looms up from behind the adjacent Gillette factory.

It is hoped to provide enough energy to keep all the office lights going all year round (133 MWh/year) and is part of a recently commissioned Combined Cooling Heating and Power (CCHP) plant.

The aim is for all of Sky’s sites to generate at least 20 per cent of their energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.

Staff estimate the amount of CO2 offset by the turbine will be equivalent to driving 370,000 miles in a typical petrol-powered car each year.

Fiona Ball, head of environmen, said: “The turbine’s position at the heart of our campus has got everyone very excited and is a clear demonstration of our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions.”
