Your local volunteers who sacrifice their time for the betterment of the community are set to be given a big “thank you” at the annual Harrow's Heroes ceremony.

Each year, getwestlondon teams up with Harrow Council to host the event which aims to show appreciation to our many inspirational community activists and selfless volunteers who do things only for others without asking for anything in return.

Harrow's volunteers are already being thanked as people flock to nominate their local activists, including the Friends of West Harrow Park group who have been nominated Volunteer Team Award.

Group member Victoria Widenka said: "We came together to make a difference, and we know that by volunteering like we have we have managed to do that."

The group managed to secure £10,000 of jubilee funding from the Queens Trust, which is in the process of using to, among other things, renovate a dilapidated toilet shed into a cafe at West Harrow Recreation Ground, in The Ridgeway, Harrow.

Mrs Widenka, who works as an opera singer, added: "You have to recognise that sometimes, even if everyone wants something, the money just is not there for the council to do it, or for someone else, but by coming together we know we can.

"We held surveys and got about 300 responses from people telling us what they want for their area, and that allowed us to work with the public realm team at the council to get the ball rolling on bringing our park back to life.

"The group is now doing all sorts like organising events and coming up with more ideas, and it is the kind of thing that only volunteers can do because the council do not always have time for a pie in the sky idea, but sometimes it just takes some local people to come together and want it enough to make it happen."

You can nominate your local hero online by visiting www.harrow.gov.uk/harrowheroes before Monday, August 18, and anyone who lives in Harrow and has done voluntary work within the past year can be nominated.

You can place your nominations into a set of categories including: Young volunteer award, Bringing people together award, Inspiring volunteer award, Health and wellbeing award, Lifelong volunteer award and the Volunteer team award.

Harrow's Heroes 2014 takes place at the Harrow Arts Centre in Uxbridge Road, Hatch End at the end of the year.
