CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed news the 110 bus is to be extended from Whitton to serve West Middlesex Hospital.

However, they are angry transport chiefs have ignored their demands for the bus to stop in Whitton High Street.

From November 19, the 110 route from Twickenham to Hounslow will be extended from Hounslow bus station to the West Mid, where it will terminate, via London Road, Busch Corner and along Twickenham Road.

Munira Wilson, who stood as the Lib Dem candidate in Feltham & Heston last year, said: "I'm really pleased Whitton residents will now have a direct bus to the hospital, without the inconvenience and added expense of having to change buses.

"However, more than 2,000 residents have signed a petition to say the 110 should serve Whitton High Street. Local councillors have been working with council officers to find a viable route, yet the Mayor of London and Transport for London are refusing to listen.”

"The Woodlawn estate has no direct link with Whitton High Street, which means local traders lose out, and, since the Tories axed Heathfield Library, residents now have to take two buses if they want to use a local library (in central Whitton).

"There is quite clearly a demand for re-routing the 110 – it's high time TfL listened to the local community."

Ann Goff, who collected the petition calling for the 110 to serve Whitton High Street, said she couldn't understand why residents' pleas were being ignored.

"They're talking about regenerating Whitton town centre and surely improving transport links goes hand in hand with that," she told the Chronicle.

"I can't think of any other high street which is served by just one bus. Even Hampton Hill has four buses and that's narrower than Whitton."

TfL has previously said the extension was not 'viable' as it would significantly extend journey times and cost a significant amount of money.
