URGENT improvements to Whitton station have been demanded in a petition launched last week.

Windsor Lines Passengers Association (WLPA) has called for improved access and better drainage at the station, and for toilets to be reopened.

Lib Dem Greater London Authority (GLA) candidate Munira Wilson teamed up with local councillors in the High Street to collect more than 300 signatures backing the appeal.

“It’s high time we had a station in Whitton fit for the 21st century,” said Ms Wilson. “The station is currently in a terrible state and impossible to access for the disabled or parents with pushchairs.

“There are plans or funding in place for improvements to other major stations in the borough (of Richmond) and now Whitton must be made a priority.

“The most important issue is to make the station fully accessible, but other improvements include better drainage to prevent puddles and flooding on the walkways, re-opening of the toilets, extending canopies and aesthetic improvements to the footbridge.”

Ms Wilson added that it was important to improve the station because of the number of rugby fans using it to access Twickenham Stadium, which will host the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.

A spokeswoman for SWT said: “We are investing £50m to improve stations across our network.

“We are aware of local community feedback about proposals to improve Whitton station and are currently engaging with Network Rail to discuss different options for this station.”
