SHOPPERS in Whitton are being urged to shop locally to boost the town's economy.

Next week marks the launch of Whitton's first Shop Local Week, and businesses and shoppers can get in the spirit thanks to a new, eco-friendly jute bag.

Town centre manager Amanda Lynson-Chappell said: "Giving your custom to local shops and businesses supports the local economy, makes for a more vibrant community, creates jobs, is environmentally beneficial and it attracts both people and new businesses to the area.

"Local shops are a vital part of Whitton's individual character. Giving them regular custom can also mean great customer service with that added personal touch. In the current economic climate, the message to the community is use them or lose them."

The bags are being sold in shops throughout Whitton town centre and cost £2.50. All money raised from the bags will go towards future community and town centre management initiatives.
