A YOUNG chef has been crowned the winner of a national cooking competition.

Ricky Matonti, 18, from Ruislip, came top of Let’s Go British 2013 following a live cookery show on May 21.

The West London University student, who is studying for his VRQ level two Chef and Restaurant Diploma, had to create dishes fit for high end dining using local ingredients supplied by Brakes and Initial Catering Services.

He was paired with a chef from Initial Catering to prepare an amuse bouche and a two course meal, which included a ‘three way duck’ with rosti potatoes and herb crusted Scottish salmon fillet.

The competition was judged by a panel from the Brakes Food Innovation Centre in London’s Covent Garden and as part of his prize, Mr Matonti will spend two days working with Michelin starred Head Chef André Garrett.

The student, who is at the London School of Hospitality and Tourism, said: "I am thrilled to have won the competition. I have always had a passion for cooking and winning this award shows just how far I have come since studying here at the University. It has been a lot of hard work but the journey has taught me so much and has brought me even closer to my dream of becoming a top chef.”

Nathan Vasanthan, Chef Lecturer at the University’s London School of Hospitality and Tourism, said: "This competition creates a rare opportunity for the experienced and junior chefs to show their passion, knowledge, creativity and flair."

He added: "Ricky demonstrated particular interest and a competitive spirit and I am certain that he will go on to win many more accolades."
