THE West London Free School has unveiled plans to open a new primary school next year.

An application will be submitted to the government next month to create a primary on the current Cambridge Grove site after the secondary school moves to its new home in Palingswick House.

This week, founder Toby Young announced his hopes for an 'all-through' free school offering the same 'classical liberal education' with a strong focus on music, art, drama and sport.

The plans are being supported by Hammersmith and Fulham council due to the severe shortage of primary places in the borough.

Mr Young, said: "It's really something we started thinking about seriously when we discovered how great the need for educational primary school places is in the borough.

"When the secondary moves to Palingswick House, the Cambridge Grove site will be vacant. We're not able to move by this September because work needs to be carried out, not so much for Cambridge Grove, as it used to be a primary school, but Palingswick House needs to be fit for purpose.

"The idea is to offer the same classical liberal education as the secondary school, with a core of academically rigorous subjects."

Initial plans would be to open with two reception classes in 2013 and fill up year by year, until it has a full complement of pupils in 2020.

The secondary school is expected to be filled by 2016.

Under the proposals any child at the primary would be eligible for a place at its senior counterpart without having to submit a separate application, and a sibling policy would be applied.

Mr Young, believes the new school will be a welcome addition to the borough.

He said: "We've only just announced this is what we're going to do, so we've had very little time for reactions, but we anticipate it will be a popular scheme as we've had over 1,000 applications for our next 120 places at the secondary school, so there is a demand for the type of education we're offering.

"However, we don't anticipate that the creation of a new primary school in Hammersmith and Fulham will have an adverse impact on any of the borough's existing primaries."

The application will be submitted next month, with a decision expected to be made by June.
