A MAN from Wembley has been fined for selling dangerous mobile phone chargers and fake accessories.

Jayesh Patel, 39, of The Avenue, Wembley, sold the items online from his Ebay 'shop' and kept them stashed at a florist he owns in High Road, Willesden.

But Patel was caught when a member of the public made a complaint to Brent and Harrow Trading Standards after buying a fake Nokia mobile battery that he had purchased online.

An investigation was launched by Trading Standards which purchased another Nokia battery from the same site.

Warrants were executed at his home address and at two florists he owns. Fake Nokia, Blackberry and Apple phone accessories and chargers were seized.

Safety experts confirmed the chargers had not been constructed in accordance with British standards and were dangerous as they could overheat or give someone an electric shock.

The court heard that between May 2009 and September 2010, the approximate value of sales from Patel's Ebay account was just under £8,000.

Patel said he had asked for genuine products from a manufacturer in China and had presumed that the goods were authentic as his supplier was also providing similar goods to other British customers. He was fined £2,500 at Brent Magistrates' Court and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £2,020 on February 4.

Bill Bilon, head of Brent & Harrow Trading Standards Service, said: “This case illustrates how important it is for businesses to ensure that the goods they are selling are not counterfeit or unsafe.

"The law quite rightly places a duty on businesses to ensure that the public are not put at risk from dangerous products and my advice to anyone thinking of importing anything into this country is to make sure that they have thoroughly researched all the necessary aspects of the goods, including their authenticity and safety.”
