Londoners have been warned to expect more snow and ice as the country remains cold.

Although Wednesday is expected to see higher temperatures than Tuesday, when much of the capital was covered with a sprinkling of snow, a yellow weather warning for snow and ice - issued by the Met Office - remains in place for Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday will be a cold, cloudy day, with a risk of scattered showers of rain, sleet and snow. Temperatures could reach a maximum of 4C.

Wintry showers could continue overnight with minimum temperatures of -1C.

The Met Office warning said: "A wintry mix of sleet and snow showers are likely to extend inland across parts of eastern, southeastern and central England on Wednesday night into Thursday.

"These are likely to lead to icy stretches on untreated surfaces. Localised snow accumulations of 1-3 cm are also possible but amounts of snow, as yet, remain uncertain, with many places probably missing the snow.

"The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel."
