The former cabinet minister died this morning in sheltered accommodation near his home in Holland Park.

Tony Benn was an active campaigner in Kensington and Chelsea often supporting the Labour group Councillors and speaking at Kensington Town Hall on local issues.

Kensington and Chelsea Labour Leader Judith Blakeman said: "Despite being a respected national and international politician, Tony Benn never neglected his own community. He was a steadfast socialist and a committed member of the Kensington Labour Party. We could call on him at any time for support in campaigns, local events and at election time. He even came to speak at the Town Hall in support of Kensington and Chelsea Council’s battle to save local Post Offices. As a guide, mentor and friend everyone in Kensington and Chelsea Labour will miss him very much."

Labour MP for Hammersmith, Andy Slaughter said: “For 30 years I have been inspired by Tony Benn. From when I first joined the Labour Party to the last time I met him, he was a towering figure over British politics. Any young person in Hammersmith who wakes up wanting to make the world a better place could get a few ideas from Tony Benn. An enormous loss to the Labour Party, the labour movement as a whole, the country, but most importantly his family. My sincere condolences are with them.”

In a statement, his children Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua said: "It is with great sadness that we announce that our father Tony Benn died peacefully early this morning at his home in west London surrounded by his family.

"We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the NHS staff and carers who have looked after him with such kindness in hospital and at home.

"We will miss above all his love which has sustained us throughout our lives. But we are comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life and so proud of his devotion to helping others as he sought to change the world for the better. Arrangements for his funeral will be announced in due course."
