A RECYCLING company has moved to reassure residents that a 15m high mound of rubbish in its yard poses no hazard to the community.

A resident of Tavistock Road, Yiewsley, contacted the Gazette, concerned about the height of the heap at the Envirowayste depot in Trout Lane, Yiewsley.

Envirowayste took over Ethos Recycling in March after it went into administration. It collects waste from construction sites before taking it to landfill.

Darren Sutton told the Gazette: "We take the dogs out for a walk along Trout Lane, and we have never seen the rubbish stacked so high as it is.

"We wondered if there was something not right."

Avril Nevin, manager of Envirowayste, said: "By the very nature of our business we have large piles of rubbish piled on site.

"We have vehicles taking rubbish out twice a day, and on one occasion last week, six times in one day.

"It is because we are successful in what we do that we have a large amount of rubbish collected.

"We stack it high so that it is easier for us to load it on to our articulated vehicles.

"It is in no way perilous but I can see how it may look to Joe Public looking in."

Mr Sutton was worried that the rubbish could spill over into the adjacent Grand Union Canal, but the Environment Agency reported no problems with the site.

Mrs Nevin added: "We had our scheduled visit from the Environment Agency this week; we are rigidly controlled."

Hillingdon Council said that after it had received reports it made the fire brigade aware of large piles of wood, in case there were any fire risks.

Envirowayste said it tries to reduce all the timber it collects to wood chips.
