A WILDCARD councillor is claiming he was impersonated after UKIP alleged he tried and failed to join them in early June.

Independent Labour Councillor Husain Akhtar, who has also been a Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Labour, and Independent councillor over the years, has written to UKIP leader Nigel Farage urging an investigation into claims he attempted to join UKIP.

In a letter addressed to Nigel Farage's European Parliament email address, Mr Akhtar wrote: "The fact is that I never contacted UKIP or wished to join your party or will ever join your party.

"Given recent local situation, it is possible that I might have been impersonated which is a serious offence and possibly a police matter.

"I give you the first opportunity to investigate this serious situation and clear my name."

While Mr Akhtar vehemently denies he requested to join UKIP, various UKIP sources claim otherwise.

A UKIP London branch spokesman told the Observer: “I can confirm that Mr Akhtar contacted a number of people in UKIP about six to eight weeks ago expressing an interest to join. We have been receiving a lot of similar interest from other sitting councillors, but rather than take anyone we are only interested in those who have shown a clear commitment to put the interests of their constituents above their own self-aggrandisement.”

Independent Labour and Harrow Council leader Thaya Idaikkadar rallied behind Mr Akhtar, saying that there was no evidence for UKIP's claims.

Chairman of UKIP for Harrow Jeremy Zeid, who last month welcomed the first Harrow Council UKIP Councillor Stanley Sheinwald, laughed off suggestions that Mr Akhtar would be allowed to join the party.

“He can join over my dead body,” he said. “He has been with every party and I will fight tooth and nail to keep him out.”   Mr Akhtar told the Observer that UKIP "makes me sick", demanding they prove their claims.
