A Marylebone pensioner who fought in the war died after falling down a flight of stairs.

Michael Goldhill, 84, of Nottingham Terrace, who served in the tank corps in WW2, was walking up a set of stairs with his wife at Cafe de Paris, in Coventry Street, West End, when he tripped and fell.

On Wednesday, Westminster Coroner's Court heard that Mr Goldhill died at King's College Hospital on April 25 from pneumonia, four days after his fall.

His wife, Pamela, who was knocked down the stairs as her husband tripped, was left with a broken wrist. She said: "I said to my husband for goodness sake 'hold on'. I thought the stairs were dangerous - it's an age thing.

"We had two years to go before our sixtieth wedding anniversary - he was lovely, he was a good man."

Deputy coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe recorded a verdict of accidental death.
