I AM writing in the hope that somebody reading your letters page can tell me whatever happened to The Clean Air Act?

I live on Harrow Hill and the quality of the air around here is deteriorating by the day.

Many homes in this area, especially during the recent cold snaps, have turned to 'trendy' wood stoves and coal fires to back up their central heating.

The appeal of these cosy fires is obvious - there is nothing nicer than snuggling up around the glow of an open fire or stove on a cold winter's night. But what are these people burning?

A couple of my neighbours burn open fires and on some days, when atmospheric conditions are right (or wrong), the air is heavy with smoke that permeates through the permanent vents in my walls and fills every room of my house with their acrid stink. If I ever want to open my window to let in some fresh air, I don't stand a chance.

Could not our council act with, at the very least, some form of awareness campaign, if not for the sake of our health and our environment, then for those of us who just want to be able to open our windows again.
