SPONSORED walkers made a splash lugging hundreds of litres of water from the river to a church to raise funds to build a well in Africa.

Last Saturday, about 50 volunteers took part in the second Walk for Water race held by Greenford Methodist Church, in Ruislip Road.

The group marched along Greenford Broadway carrying buckets of water from the River Brent, at Costons Lane, to the church as many times as possible.

In an hour and a half, they carried 1,500 litres to fill a children's paddling pool and raise money for charity Operation WellFound (CORRECT), which will use the cash to drill a new well in a village in Senegal.

Minister Kip Bennett said: "Around the world everyday about 900 million people depend on taking buckets to the river for their water source. They have no clean drinking water and walk miles for it.

"It went very well indeed. Particularly because the sun shone for the steel band and barbecue in the forecourt of the church.

"The river is significantly far from the church but not too far and the route is straight down the town centre so everybody got to see it too."

Last year, the church raised almost £4,500 and hope to match that this year.
