Taking inspiration from retail guru Mary Portas, staff from GlaxoSmithKline volunteered their time to re-vamp charity shops across Hillingdon.

Staff from the company, based in Stockley Park, West Drayton, gave window displays a make-over at Harlington Hospice shops throughout the borough.

Teams of volunteers battled it out in a bid to win the best dressed window award.

Claudette St Paul, a member of the GSK Ruislip Manor team - who were announced winners of the best dressed window competition - helped to organise the day.

She said: "The Volunteers all thoroughly enjoyed their busy day spent working in Charity Shops run by Harlington Hospice and meeting members of the local community.

"Some of us became fashion and homeware advisors for the day and tried to encourage as many sales as possible.

"Kathryn Underwood from Harlington Hospice judged the competition, and I am more than pleased to announce that the Ruislip Manor Team - along with our little helper Daisy Givens, four, who contributed a beautifully hand-drawn hedgehog for our window display after a hard morning at school - were announced the winners."

GSK volunteers at the Ickenham shop in Swakeleys Road sold raffle tickets to customers and made their window display such a success they were even selling display items.

The charity shop make-overs were part of GSK's Orange Day, which gives its employees one paid day off each year to volunteer for a good cause.
