A charity football tournament in Isleworth between 600 Nandos staff helped raise awareness for the Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO) organisation.

While teams from branches across the UK battled it out on the pitch for the Nandos football cup, off the pitch players heard stories first hand from volunteer nurse David Atherton who recently returned from a placement in Malawi.

The team up between the famous Portuguese restaurant and VSO which aims to fight poverty through volunteers also raised funds through a raffle, during the event held at the Goals Soccer Centre in MacFarlane Lane, on Tuesday (23).

VSO volunteer nurse, David Atherton, shares his overseas experience with Nandos staff at football tournament in Isleworth

Mr Atherton, 31, from Yorkshire, said: “While I was volunteering in Malawi, I saw first-hand how the money raised for VSO made a positive impact on communities – so to see how the other side of it works was great.

”Speaking at the annual Nando’s Cup also provided the perfect platform to tell Nando’s staff about the positive impact of volunteering, personally and professionally.

"When you’re in the UK working in the same old routine you can get stuck in a bit of a rut, so volunteering overseas definitely offers you an exciting and refreshing experience.

“I would say to anyone thinking of doing VSO, just go for it – make volunteering one of your goals."

VSO is looking for volunteers from nurses and teachers to IT professionals.
