YOUNG people can get their hands on sought after gig tickets in return for volunteering thanks to a unique scheme in Wembley.
Orange RockCorps gives young volunteers the chance to see their favourite stars at Wembley Arena in return for giving up just four hours of their time on community projects across Brent.
The main event, at the arena on July 12, will see performances by Primal Scream as well as chart sensations Jessie J and Eliza Doolittle, who was at the launch of the project in Wembley on Tuesday last week.
Volunteers kicked off proceedings at Wembley Arena by painting murals, creating mosaics, building benches and planters for the local community and they also got a helping hand from the 'Pack Up' singer as they fixed and re-painted bicycles which were donated to Salusbury WORLD - a charity which offers support to refugee and asylum seeking children and families.
Other projects put forward by Brent Council to take place over the summer include the transformation of an empty pub into a community facility and helping social enterprise The Lexi Cinema create space for outdoor screenings.
Having put forwards ideas for community projects leader of Brent Council, Councillor Ann John, OBE said: “The projects put forward to Orange RockCorps represent the council’s will to develop the arts alongside regeneration.
“We’re already doing this in Brent with the South Kilburn Studios, whereby creative industry professionals take on a trainees aged 18-25 in lieu of rent. This unique project addresses youth unemployment and skills development as well as helping start-up businesses.”
In previous years the main event has been staged at the Royal Albert Hall and founder and CEO of RockCorps Stephen Greene added: “We are thrilled that the demand to volunteer is such that we are now moving to Wembley Arena.
“Having the support of Brent Council is the perfect way to start 2011. This year, 11,000 volunteers will earn their ticket to Wembley Arena and we are very happy to be working with Brent Council on several projects in the borough.”
