That councillors decided to grant permission for the Dickens Yard development should come as no surprise to anyone.

The scheme is openly viewed by the borough's leaders as the key to unlocking future prosperity, and the fact it is to be built on council-owned land will hardly hurt the public coffers.

The utopia presented by those in favour of the scheme is an attractive one, with crowds swarming to live, eat and shop in a gleaming new Ealing.

But we live in uncertain times, and if the London Mayor agrees with the plans, all involved must work hard to ensure that a project of such magnitude is completed successfully.

Mad as a hatter

YOU couldn't make it up; a company has ordered a popular employee to get his rid of his trademark colourful hat due to - wait for it - health and safety.

Greenford recycling worker Mike Ahmed is a big hit with colleagues and the public and was always seen with his customised headgear, brightening an often grimy job.

But now a jobsworth has ordered that Mike lose the hat, which was in no danger of causing even the slighest degree of harm to anyone.

A regulation with no practical purpose has once again been enforced by an overly-zealous employer. They'll be cancelling Christmas next.
